                                                                All lessons are private. Group lessons are not available.

                                                                Teachers Bio's

                                                                Tom Mesich - Guitar, Bass, Banjo, Mandolin and Flute

                                                                Tom has a Masters Degree from the American Conservatory of Music. He has over 35 years of teaching Guitar, Bass, Mandolin and Flute. He has been teaching at Modern Music for over 27 years, and taught many noteworthy teachers and players in the area.

                                                                Mike Aquino - Guitar and Bass

                                                                Since he received his first guitar at the age of eight, Mike has dedicated his life to learning, teaching, playing, and living the guitar.  He took an early interest in the classic rock of Brian May and Queen, Eric Clapton and Lynyrd Skynyrd.  Later, the soulful licks of blues, the impromptu of jazz, and the technical mastery of country infused themselves into his talent.  After graduating from Roosevelt University's Chicago Music College with a BA in Music Education (with a special emphasis in jazz), Mike quickly became part of the busy Chicago music scene.  He was highly sought after for unlimited sideman gigs with many of the area's hottest bands, and he eventually co-founded the Daniel Grove Band in the mid-1990s.  This effort was rewarded with a Chicago Music Award nomination for Best Country Record. His ability to connect with guitarists from all ages and levels of proficiency ensure that every student receives a thorough, yet personable approach to their music education.

                                                                Mike Hobson - Guitar and Bass

                                                                In January 2005 Mike joined the Modern Music Teaching Staff. An Accomplished bass player and guitatist, Mike has traveled the world performing with verious groups in many different styles. At Eight years old Mike began studying the guitar, and at 14 he added electric bass and string bass to his repertoire . After high school Mike attended Depaul University where he studied classical double bass with Rob Kassinger of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

                                                                Scott Gillis - Drums

                                                                Scott been playing drums professionally for about 24 years now. Scott has been teaching at Modern Music for about 16 of those and still carry a load of about 30 students per week. Scott is also a continuing student. has had the good fortune to have a few great teachers such as Mike Folker from the Elgin Symphony, Duane Thamm (Dick Shorey Band, Lionel Hampton, Sinatra, etc.), and Paul Wertico (Pat Metheny, Jeff Berlin, John Moulder Trio). Scott has played in most of the minor and major rock venues in and around Chicago and a few international gigs including The Cavern Club in Liverpool and Canada with an East Indian band.

                                                                Betty Ann Sturm - Piano, Saxophone, Trumpet

                                                                Betty has a Bachelor of Music Education from De Paul University and a Master of Science from Lewis University.  She is Actively teaching at two parochial schools in the Naperville area. Betty is also a charter member of the Women's Band Director National Association.  She received the Who's Who Among American Teachers Award in 2000 and 2005. Actively playing in the Starlighters swing band and "The American Wind concert band.

                                                                Rudy Rendek - Guitar and Violin

                                                                Rudy Rendek started studying the violin at age 4. Throughout his teenage years, he ventured into the world of electric guitar and string bass. He has performed in various ensembles and orchestras including the IMEA District Orchestra (2008), IMEA All State Orchestra (2009 & 2010), IMEA District Honors Jazz Band (2007, 2009, & 2010). Rudy was also named "Outstanding Soloist" three times at the Purdue University Jazz Festival (2007, 2009, & 2010). In May of 2010, he auditioned for a spot to perform Saint Saens Violin Concerto #3 (3rd Mvmt) as a "Senior Solo" for the DGN Orchestra in his hometown of Downers Grove, IL. In addition he received a perfect score at honors program recital. Ever since 2008 he has been playing guitar and singing in local Rock bands throughout the Chicago suburbs.

                                                                Carole Rendek - Piano

                                                                Carole has been a dedicated member of the Modern Music teaching staff for over 13 years. Her ability to work with students of all ages along with her proficiency in piano, organ, and voice has led to a very successful career as a part time teacher. Carole has also worked as a music director and head organist for several churches in the south Chicago land area over the past 20 years. Currently she is a member of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).
